Benefits of Weight Loss Surgery

Multiple studies, journal articles, and trials have confirmed the many benefits of surgical weight loss. This form of treating obesity can significantly improve and enhance the lives of overweight individuals through a short procedure. For the severely obese, several bariatric studies have concluded that surgery is a better option for losing weight and maintaining weight loss than nonsurgical remedies.
Gastric bypass surgery eliminates on average 60 percent of extra weight in obese patients. In two or three years, the average surgical patient sheds about 65 kilograms. Restrictive surgeries like the Lap-Band procedure are equally as effective, initiating an average excess weight loss of about 50 percent.
Patients will begin experiencing a higher quality of life as soon as they walk out the hospital or health clinic. Studies have shown that patients have multiple types of ailments and conditions alleviated after surgery.
* Obesity can be the harbinger of a variety of deadly conditions that afflict South Africans. Heart disease, cancer, and diabetes are all big killers of South Africans and occur more often in the obese. Weight loss surgery can help reverse this trend as long-term studies have found that patients who underwent surgical weight loss were drastically less likely to die from cancer, heart disease, and diabetes 10 years after their procedure.
* Patients may have their diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol treated. According to one study, ninety percent of diabetes sufferers saw their condition improve dramatically or go away completely. About half saw a steep drop in their blood pressure levels, and more than three in five encountered a fall in their elevated cholesterol levels.
* Severe arthritis and sleep apnea are conditions that both commonly surface in the obese. About 85 percent of surgery patients had their sleep apnea cured or saw it improve. Patients have also reported a reduction in joint pain and urinary incontinence syndrome.
* Nearly 95 percent of people who have had weight reduction surgery have reported a higher quality of life. Obesity often triggers depression or other mental health conditions. Patients have reported that their symptoms of depression and anxiety have eased after surgery. One clinical trial has shown that gastric bypass surgery extended the life of nine in 10 obese patients.
